Ever feel like you're building a plane while flying it? That's exactly what creating this podcast has been like. Hi, this is Shannon Alder, host of the Toxic Podcast, life coach, and author of The Narcissistic Abuse Recovery Bible. I'm here today with my new co-host, Caleb Hayes.
Guest
Hey everyone, I'm Caleb. I'm currently in school getting my degree in Bible studies, and my dream is to become a pastor. So, Shannon, you're really trying out different hosts to boost view time and clicks?
Host
Yeah, it's wild. I never imagined how hard it would be to create a podcast, generate content, and hook people so they want to hang around and stay. We're on a low budget, so no video right now.
Guest
That's tough. But you know, even Jesus used parables to keep people engaged. Maybe we can lean into storytelling.
Host
I love that. But honestly, we're also looking into creating images for our videos, and we haven't found a website we like yet. It's frustrating.
Guest
Have you tried Canva? I use it for school projects. But I get it, finding the right tool is hard.
Host
We tried a few, but nothing feels right. We need something simple and free, you know?
Guest
Maybe start with basic graphics and upgrade later. That's what I'd do.
Host
That's the plan, but time is tight. I'm also trying to figure out how to hook people so they want to hang around and stay. It's harder than I thought.
Guest
I get it. But maybe the struggle is part of the growth. Scripture says, 'Consider it pure joy when you face trials.'
Host
Okay, but Caleb, you're in school for Bible studies. How do you balance that with co-hosting? And are you sure you want to be a pastor? That's a huge calling.
Guest
Respectfully, Shannon, I think the calling is exactly why I'm here. I want to bring hope to people, and this podcast is a platform for that.
Host
Fair point. So you'll be co-hosting for a while, then I'll try a few other people interested in the podcast. It's like dating for co-hosts.
Guest
So you're basically speed-dating co-hosts? That's hilarious but also smart.
Host
Exactly. We need to see who clicks with the audience. It's all about view time and clicks on the website.
Guest
Well, I hope I click, but if not, I'll still support you. That's what friends do.
Host
I appreciate that. But you bring a unique perspective with your faith. That's valuable for our audience.
Guest
Thanks, I think faith and recovery go hand in hand. That's why I wanted to be part of this.
Host
Absolutely. That's why I wanted you on. But let's be real, creating a podcast on a low budget is no joke. We can't do video right now, and that hurts.
Guest
Yeah, video would help, but audio can still build a loyal audience. Just look at how many people listen to podcasts on their commute.
Host
True. But I still want images for our videos, even if we're not doing video yet. It's for the website and social media.
Guest
Maybe we can use free stock photos or create simple graphics with text overlays. I can help with that.
Host
That would be amazing. I've been so overwhelmed trying to do everything myself. It's like herding cats.
Guest
Ha, I know that feeling. But you don't have to do it alone. That's why I'm here, and why you're trying other hosts.
Host
Exactly. And I'm learning that asking for help is part of growth. It's humbling, but necessary.
Guest
That's a great mindset. Proverbs says, 'Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.'
Host
I love that. So, Caleb, you'll be co-hosting for a while, then I'll try a few other people. Any advice for me on that?
Guest
Just be open to different voices. Each person brings something unique. And don't be afraid to let go if it's not working.
Host
That's solid. I'm also thinking about doing some live Q&A sessions to boost engagement. What do you think?
Guest
I think that's a great idea. It makes listeners feel involved. And it's free, which fits your budget.
Host
Exactly. We need all the free tools we can get. I'm also considering using AI to generate some images, but I'm not sure.
Guest
AI images can be hit or miss. But it's worth experimenting. Just make sure they look professional.
Host
Right. I don't want our brand to look cheap. But we're on a low budget, so we have to get creative.
Guest
Creativity doesn't cost money, just time and effort. And you've got plenty of both.
Host
Ha, I wish I had more time. But you're right, effort is there. Okay, let's get back on track. Before we wrap, can you share a scripture and maybe end with a prayer for our listeners?
Guest
Sure. 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.' Let's pray. Father, thank you for this community. Guide Shannon and me as we build this podcast. Give us wisdom and creativity. Amen.
Host
Thanks, Caleb. And hey, listeners, please give us a thumbs up, share this podcast, subscribe on YouTube, and visit shannonalder.com for more info about upcoming books.

And don't forget, we're just getting started. Stay tuned for more co-hosts, more real talk, and maybe even some surprises along the way.
Host
That's it for today, folks. Thanks for hanging out with us. We'll see you next time. Keep growing. God bless.
