Welcome back to the show. Today we're diving into the incredible world of Mesoamerica, from the Olmec to the Aztec.
Guest
It’s a fascinating journey. It all starts with maize, the agricultural backbone that allowed these complex societies to flourish.
Host
Right, and the Olmec set the stage with those massive stone heads. Were they meant to be specific rulers?
Guest
Exactly. They represented individual elites. But the Maya took complexity further with their intricate glyphs and the famous Long Count calendar.
Host
People often say the Maya "disappeared" around AD 900. That seems like a bit of a stretch, doesn't it?
Guest
I’d argue it was a political collapse, not a disappearance. Cities like Chichén Itzá actually thrived much later through trade.
Host
Good point. Then we have the Aztec, building Tenochtitlán on a swamp. Their Triple Alliance was a massive military powerhouse.
Guest
Truly. Their ritual sacrifices were intense, but they also had a highly stratified society with incredible poetry and vast markets.

It’s a legacy cut short by the Spanish. Thanks for joining us to explore these ancient empires today. See you next time!
