Quick reference: how long is a 150 wpm speech?

How the calculator works

The formula is simple: speaking time = word count ÷ speaking pace (wpm). We multiply by 60 to convert minutes into seconds for a precise estimate.

For example, a 750-word wedding toast at a relaxed 130 wpm runs roughly 5 minutes 46 seconds. The same script at a fast 180 wpm would take 4 minutes 10 seconds.

Real-world delivery is rarely uniform. If your speech includes pauses for emphasis, audience reactions, or slide transitions, add a 10–15% buffer to the estimate. Speakers reading from a teleprompter typically hit 150–160 wpm; speakers delivering from memory or notes are usually slower.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to read 500 words out loud?

At an average speaking pace of 150 words per minute, 500 words takes about 3 minutes 20 seconds to read aloud. Slower paces (100 wpm) take 5 minutes; faster paces (180 wpm) take about 2 minutes 47 seconds.

How long is a 1,000 word speech?

A 1,000 word speech runs roughly 6 minutes 40 seconds at 150 wpm, the average for public speakers. Casual or conversational delivery (130 wpm) stretches it to ~7 minutes 42 seconds.

Most native English speakers deliver speeches at 130–160 words per minute. Podcast hosts trend slightly faster (~160 wpm), while audiobook narrators slow down to ~150 wpm for clarity.

How accurate is this calculator?

The estimate is based on word count divided by speaking pace. Real delivery time varies with pauses, emphasis, and audience reactions. For a polished speech, add 10–15% buffer for pauses.

How long is a typical podcast episode in words?

A 30-minute podcast at 160 wpm uses around 4,800 words of script or transcript. A 60-minute episode runs ~9,600 words.
